MAME releases can be divided into two main parts:

1. The official stable releases, currently MAME 0.131 at time of writing.

2. The intermediate updates such as MAME 0.130u4 which was the last update before 0.131.

This distinction is important to realize. The official releases are recommended for casual users. The intermediate updates with the letter "u" in the version number are meant for use by MAME bug testers and may incorporate unstable changes. So unless you're a MAME tester, it's normally best to stick with the official releases without the letter "u" in the version number.

2013 Update: Lately I've noticed that there aren't any more "u" version unstable update releases coming out from MAMEDev. There have only been stable versions since MAME 0.150 on 17 Sep 2013. It seems that MAME 0.149u1 on 23 Jul 2013 will be the last of the "u" versions.

I might do a bit of bug testing but yeah as Hiero said, if you're just playing for the real deal then don't bother downloading the latest versions until they're official
