How To Use MAME Cheats

A demonstration of how to find, setup, and use MAME cheats. This is mainly about cheat.zip for newer versions of MAME, although it's pretty much the same deal with cheat.dat for the older MAMEs. The only difference with cheat.dat setup is that it must be fully extracted into the root directory.

Also see the MAME Cheats Help Desk for any other difficulties.

How to Save High Scores in MAME

The following is quoted from Leezer's Unofficial Highscore.dat page:
  • "Hiscore.dat is a complimentary file to help Mame in saving high scores.
Most Mame games save their high scores by default, but over 2500 games
do not save their high scores.

The Hiscore.dat file tells Mame some additional information and how to read and store the high scores using the /hi directory instead of /nvram."
My tutorial will help you locate and setup the hiscore.dat correctly.

MAME CHD Info and How To

CHD files are often a source of great confusion for MAME newbies. Find out what CHDs are and how to set them up properly with my quick tutorial.

Some other important things to realise about MAME CHD games. Many of them are still in preliminary emulation status and even though you may be able to download them somewhere, there is no way for them work in MAME until the emulation is more complete. One way to check the emulation status of any game is in MAME itself. Open current MAMEUI and click the CHD folder in the left field to view all CHD games, then click a game to view status near the bottom right.

Even so, once you have an idea of which games may or may not be worth downloading there aren't always any guarantees that a particular game will run properly on your system. Some games, like Gauntlet Legends for example, would require something approaching a super computer to run at full original performance. Others, like Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, will generally run fine even on an old P4, in spite of the cps3.c driver status still being classified as imperfect at the time of writing.
